Aston at the Waikiki Banyan Overview
First Impressions
Walking into Aston at the Waikiki Banyan, you immediately get that “this is actually Hawaii” feeling — not just another generic hotel that happens to be on an island. The lobby has this relaxed, residential vibe that makes sense once you realize this three-star property is essentially a condo-hotel setup. You’re not getting marble floors and crystal chandeliers here, but honestly, that’s not what Waikiki is about anyway. The staff greets you with genuine aloha spirit, and there’s something refreshing about a place that doesn’t try too hard to impress.
Location & Neighborhood
Here’s where this place really shines — the location is honestly incredible for the price point. You’re right in the heart of Waikiki on Ohua Avenue, which means you can walk to the beach in about three minutes (I timed it). What I love is that you’re close enough to all the action on Kalakaua Avenue, but Ohua is just quiet enough that you’re not dealing with constant street noise. Couples seem to get this — they consistently rate the location highly, and I can see why. You can grab breakfast at a local spot, hit the beach, then wander back for pau hana drinks without ever needing a car. Speaking of cars, they actually have private parking, which is pretty much gold in Waikiki.
The Accommodations
The rooms are essentially studio and one-bedroom condos, which means you get way more space than a typical hotel room. Most units come with a kitchenette — nothing fancy, but perfect for making coffee in the morning or storing those poke bowls you’ll inevitably buy too many of. The lanais (balconies) vary depending on which side you’re on, but even the partial ocean views give you that tropical feeling. The decor is… well, it’s functional island style. Think rattan furniture and tropical prints that have seen some sun, but everything’s clean and the air conditioning works great, which matters more than fancy throw pillows when it’s 85 degrees outside.
Amenities & Atmosphere
The pool area is where people tend to hang out, and it’s got this nice community feel — you’ll see families, couples, and solo travelers all mixing together. There’s a decent-sized pool with some lounge chairs, though you’ll want to claim yours early if you’re planning a pool day. The building also has a recreation deck with barbecue grills, which is actually pretty cool if you want to grill some fresh fish from the local market. You know what’s nice? The whole place feels more like staying in a local apartment building than a tourist hotel, which gives you a better sense of what living in Waikiki might actually be like.
Why Guests Love It
This isn’t the fanciest place in Waikiki, but it delivers exactly what most people actually want — a clean, comfortable base in an unbeatable location without breaking the bank. The condo-style setup means you have options beyond hotel restaurants for every meal, and the residential feel helps you settle into island time more naturally. Honestly, when you’re spending most of your day at the beach or exploring the island anyway, having a reliable, well-located place to crash makes perfect sense. It’s the kind of spot where you’ll find yourself planning your next Hawaii trip before you’ve even checked out.
To book a hotel in Hawaii during the whale-watching season, visitors plan ahead to balance volcano hikes with sunset dinners on the lanai.

Location just 2 blocks from the beach and the Main Street in Waikiki. Hot tubs and pool on location. High floor give a great view of the ocean. Nice sized rooms! Staff was friendly and helped us switch to a better room when the original assigned one didn’t meet expectations.

First rm we looked at was bad carpet was musty, shower head real rusted out, balcony door lock wouldn't lock. I went down stairs and let them know they were real good about it, I looked at another rm and that was much nicer we took it. But no luggage rack, no alarm clock, other than that it was ok. Cliff was such a good host.
