Hotel Description

You know what caught me off guard about Awaa Place? It’s one of those spots that feels way more special than its 3-star rating suggests. I mean, when you’re staying up in Kamuela Heights, you’re basically getting this elevated perspective of the Big Island that most tourists never experience – it’s like having a secret viewpoint that locals actually know about.

The place itself has this genuine Hawaiian residential vibe that honestly beats those cookie-cutter resort experiences. You’re staying in what feels like a real home in a real neighborhood, which I actually loved. There’s something refreshing about hearing roosters in the morning instead of elevator dings, you know? The hosts clearly put thought into the details – I’m talking about those little touches that make you feel like you’re staying with friends rather than just renting a room. The 8.0 rating makes total sense once you’re there because it’s not trying to be something it’s not, it’s just doing its thing really well.

What really sold me was the location in Kamuela Heights itself. You’re close enough to Waimea town that you can grab dinner or hit the farmers market without any hassle, but far enough up the hill that you get those crisp upcountry evenings – which, let me tell you, feel amazing after a day at the beach. The elevation means it actually gets cool at night (pack a light jacket, seriously), and the stars up there are incredible since you’re away from most of the light pollution. I spent way too many evenings just sitting outside looking up. Plus, you’re perfectly positioned if you want to explore the northern part of the island – Mauna Kea, the Kohala Coast beaches, even that gorgeous drive up to Pololu Valley. Parking was never an issue, which honestly is such a relief compared to some places on the island. The whole setup just works, especially if you’re the type of traveler who wants to experience the real Hawaii rather than the resort version of it.

To book a hotel in Hawaii during the famous winter whale watching season, visitors should make reservations well in advance as the islands attract tropical paradise seekers and ocean lovers from around the world.
