Bears’ Place Guest House Overview
First Impressions
When I first pulled up to Bears’ Place Guest House on Puukala Street, I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect from this three-star spot in Kailua-Kona. But you know what? Sometimes the best places are the ones that surprise you. This isn’t your typical flashy resort — it’s more like staying at a friend’s place who happens to have really good taste and knows how to make guests feel welcome. The property has this relaxed, residential vibe that immediately puts you at ease, which is exactly what you want after a long flight to the Big Island.
Location Perks
The location here is actually pretty brilliant — couples seem to get this, rating it 8.1 for romantic getaways. You’re close enough to all the Kailua-Kona action but far enough away that you’re not dealing with the tourist crowds every time you step outside. I mean, you can easily walk to the historic downtown area and the waterfront, but when you come back to Bears’ Place, it feels like you’re in a quiet neighborhood where locals actually live. The free private parking on-site is honestly a godsend — anyone who’s tried to find parking in downtown Kona during peak season knows what I’m talking about.
The Accommodations
Each room here has its own personality, which I really appreciate. They’re not cookie-cutter hotel rooms — there’s actual character and thoughtful touches that make you feel like you’re staying somewhere special. The spaces are clean and comfortable without being overly fancy, and honestly, that works perfectly for this kind of place. You get everything you need without paying for amenities you probably won’t use anyway. The guest house setup means you might interact with other travelers, which can be nice if you’re the social type.
What Makes It Work
The owners clearly understand what travelers actually want — a clean, comfortable place to sleep that doesn’t break the bank but still feels welcoming. Recent guests have been rating the location 8.3, and I can see why. You’re positioned perfectly to explore both the cultural sites in town and the natural attractions along the coast. Plus, there’s something to be said for staying somewhere that feels more authentic than the big resort complexes. You get a better sense of what it’s actually like to live on the Big Island.
Why Guests Love It
Bears’ Place Guest House hits that sweet spot between budget-friendly and genuinely pleasant. It’s the kind of place where you spend your days exploring lava tubes and snorkeling at Kahalu’u Beach, then come back to somewhere that feels like home base rather than just another hotel room. The 8.1 overall rating reflects what I experienced — solid value, great location, and the kind of low-key hospitality that makes a Hawaii trip memorable for the right reasons. If you’re looking for a place that lets you experience Kona like a local rather than a tourist, this guest house delivers exactly that.

The place is pretty quiet and the nature around the room was good. The balcony was huge and you can sit and listen to the great sounds of birds and at night the sounds of frogs were awesome. The owners allowed us early check in which was great. Overall it is a good value for money.

Bear's Place Guest House was our home for 5 days and it was the perfect place to start our island stay. We spent much time on our studio's private lanai, which is surrounded by lush green plant life, and was often visited by geckos and butterflies. The coqui frogs are abundant and their nighttime songs were a perfect lullaby each night.
Everything was clean and simple. The onsite laundry was a great bonus, and the location was great for us. The other guests who stayed during the same period of time were quiet and really friendly.
