The Waikoloa area itself is sort of this perfect middle ground on the Big Island’s Kohala Coast. You’re not dealing with the tourist chaos of Kona, but you’re also not stuck in the middle of nowhere. The Shores complex sits where you can actually hear the ocean if you step out on the lanai in the evening (though during the day, there’s usually enough activity that it gets drowned out). I mean, the Kings’ Shops and Queens’ MarketPlace are literally a few minutes away if you need groceries or want to grab dinner without cooking – and let me tell you, having two full bathrooms when you’re traveling with family or friends is a game-changer that you don’t appreciate until you have it.

What I really loved was how the place felt lived-in but not worn down, if that makes sense. The kitchen actually had decent knives and cookware – not the usual dull, mismatched stuff you get in most rentals. Both bedrooms had proper blackout curtains (crucial if you’re dealing with jet lag), and the AC units were quiet enough that they didn’t keep me up at night.
