Luana Inn Overview
First Impressions
You know what struck me about Luana Inn right away? It’s this unassuming three-star gem tucked along Lower Nāpo’opo’o Road that feels like someone’s well-kept secret. I mean, Captain Cook isn’t exactly where most tourists end up staying, but honestly — that’s part of what makes this place special. The inn sits in this quiet residential area where you can actually hear the birds in the morning instead of traffic, and there’s something refreshingly authentic about the whole setup.
Location & Local Charm
Here’s the thing about Captain Cook — it’s perfectly positioned for exploring the real Big Island without the tourist crowds. You’re maybe ten minutes from Kealakekua Bay (where Captain Cook actually met his end, if you’re into history), and the snorkeling there is absolutely incredible. The parking situation is a dream compared to the resort areas — free and right on site, which you’ll appreciate when you’re hauling beach gear around. What I loved most was how the locals at the nearby coffee farms treated you like a neighbor rather than just another visitor passing through.
The Room Experience
The room itself won’t win any design awards, but it’s clean, comfortable, and has everything you actually need. I appreciated the local touches — artwork from island artists and that relaxed island vibe that doesn’t feel forced or touristy. The beds are surprisingly comfortable (I’m picky about this), and the air conditioning works well, which matters more than you’d think after a day hiking in Hawaiian sun. There’s also decent WiFi if you need to check in with the outside world, though honestly, you might not want to.
Breakfast & Hospitality
The breakfast spread actually impressed me — they do a proper full American breakfast alongside vegetarian options, and the staff clearly puts thought into it rather than just throwing together continental basics. The coffee is local (obviously), and they’re happy to point you toward the best spots for everything from farmers markets to hidden beaches. What really stood out was how the staff knew the area inside and out — these aren’t seasonal workers reading from scripts, they’re locals who genuinely want you to experience their island properly.
Why Guests Love It
Look, couples especially seem to get what this place is about — the location rating of 9.5 from recent guests tells you everything you need to know. It’s not about fancy amenities or Instagram-worthy pools; it’s about being in the right spot to actually experience Hawaii rather than just vacation there. You’re close enough to the action when you want it, but far enough away to feel like you’re living on island time. For the price point, you’re getting authentic Hawaiian hospitality and a base camp for real adventures — whether that’s diving with manta rays or just finding that perfect sunset spot that isn’t crawling with tour buses.

The peaceful view over the pool area and the courtesy and friendliness of Carol and Kevin, the caretakers, was awesome. Breakfast with fresh fruits and local delicacies in the pool area was delicious and relaxing and the lawn was well taken care of.

A gorgeous, tranquil place. We really enjoyed our stay and would have liked to stay longer. The view from our room and the pool area was spectacular, the room was very spacious and comfortable, the breakfast was delicious and the fruit salad beautiful! The couple who looked after us were really nice…We hope to go back one day!

This Inn is located in a quiet, more rural part of Kona. It is very private and secluded. We enjoyed the beautiful view of the ocean and swimming in the non-chlorinated pool.

Great location. Diana was wonderful. Very helpful with questions and found some extra kitchen supplies for us when I asked. Also offered some fresh papaya from the property for breakfast.
