Hotel Description
You know what? Club Wyndham Kona really surprised me. I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up, I wasn’t expecting much from a 3-star place, but this spot has that relaxed Big Island vibe down pat. The property sits in a way where you actually feel like you’re in Hawaii, not just some generic resort that could be anywhere.
The rooms are honestly pretty solid for what you’re paying. Nothing fancy, but they’re clean and have that lived-in comfort that makes you want to kick back with a beer on the lanai. Speaking of which – the lanais here are legit. I mean, you’re not getting oceanfront views at every turn, but there’s something about the way the trade winds hit the property that just works. The pool area becomes this little social hub in the evenings, and I actually enjoyed chatting with other guests there (which, let’s be real, doesn’t always happen at hotels).
What really gets me about this place is how it feels more like a local spot than a tourist trap. The staff – they’re not putting on some rehearsed aloha show, they’re just genuinely helpful people who know the island. Check-in was smooth, no weird upselling tactics, and when I asked about good local spots for dinner, they pointed me toward places that weren’t in my guidebook. That’s worth something, you know? The location works well too – you’re close enough to Kailua-Kona that you can walk to decent restaurants and shops, but far enough from the cruise ship madness that you can actually relax. Parking’s easy, which honestly matters more than people think when you’re trying to explore the island during the day.
Here’s the thing though – this isn’t a luxury resort, and it doesn’t pretend to be. The 8.6 rating makes sense because it delivers exactly what it promises without any weird surprises. I’ve stayed at fancier places on the Big Island that left me feeling like I overpaid, and I’ve stayed at cheaper spots that made me regret saving money. Club Wyndham Kona hits that sweet spot where you feel like you made a smart choice. The property has this sort of low-key energy that matches the Big Island perfectly – nothing’s rushed, nothing’s over-the-top, but everything just works. If you’re the type who needs a spa and five restaurants on-site, this probably isn’t your place. But if you want a comfortable home base for exploring the island without breaking the bank, and you appreciate that authentic Hawaiian pace where people actually take time to talk story, then yeah, this place gets it right.
Visitors often choose Hawaii apartments over traditional hotels because they provide more space, kitchen facilities, and the opportunity to live like a local in this magnificent Pacific paradise.

Property grounds are nice, very tidy, clean. The one pool working pool was clean. It was quiet with nice lounge chairs. The rooms are nice with 2 full queen beds and 2 full bathroom ensuites. Full kitchens and huge outdoor lanais.

Great location in a calm area a bit outside the city but remaining at walking distance (Even though having a car is highly recommended). I travelled there for the Ironman and being on the course and at walking distance of everything made it very practical for me and my support crew! Staff was also very friendly and helpful!
I would definitely book here again if I ever come back to Kona!Gregory from United States (9/10)
