You know what struck me first about Fairway Villas Waikoloa? It’s got this laid-back residential vibe that honestly feels more like staying at a friend’s condo than a typical hotel. The property sits right in the heart of Waikoloa on the Big Island, and I mean *right* where you want to be – you can literally walk to some of the best beaches on the Kohala Coast without dealing with resort crowds or paying those ridiculous parking fees at the fancy places.

The villas themselves are pretty spacious, which is huge when you’re traveling with family or just want room to spread out after a long day of exploring. I stayed in a two-bedroom unit and was surprised by how well-equipped the kitchen was – actually had decent knives and real plates, not the usual flimsy hotel stuff. The living areas have that comfortable, lived-in feel with tropical decor that doesn’t feel too theme-park-y, if you know what I mean. Sure, the furnishings aren’t brand new (it’s a 3-star property after all), but everything’s clean and functional. The lanais are where you’ll probably spend most of your time anyway – perfect for morning coffee or evening wine while you watch the golfers on the nearby courses.

What I really appreciated was how the staff actually knows the area. The front desk folks gave me solid recommendations for local spots that weren’t just the touristy standbys. They pointed me toward this little poke place in Waikoloa Village that I never would’ve found otherwise, and steered me away from some of the more crowded snorkel spots in favor of a quieter beach that was honestly better anyway. The property has a nice pool area that gets good sun most of the day – not too crowded even during peak season, probably because a lot of guests are out exploring rather than lounging around. Check-in was smooth, parking’s easy and free (which is not a given in Hawaii, trust me), and the grounds are well-maintained without feeling overly manicured.

Location-wise, you’re about 20 minutes from the airport, which is convenient for those early flights, and you can hit either Hapuna Beach or Mauna Kea Beach in under 10 minutes. The Kings’ Shops and Queens’ MarketPlace are close enough to walk if you need groceries or forgot sunscreen, but far enough that you’re not dealing with constant foot traffic. I’d say this place works best for people who want a comfortable home base without paying resort prices – especially if you’re planning to be out and about rather than hanging around the property all day. It’s not luxury, but it’s solid, reliable, and the kind of place you’d actually want to come back to.
