Hotel Description

You know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Hale O Malu at Kaloli Point – I mean, it’s technically a 3-star place, but honestly, that rating system doesn’t capture what this spot is really about. The moment you step onto the property, there’s this immediate sense of being somewhere that actually understands the Big Island vibe. It’s not trying to be some flashy resort (thank god), but rather feels like someone’s really thoughtful take on what Hawaiian hospitality should be.

The location at Kaloli Point is actually pretty brilliant if you know the area – you’re far enough from the Kona crowds to feel like you’ve discovered something, but close enough that you’re not stuck in the middle of nowhere. What really got me was how the trade winds hit this spot perfectly. I spent way too much time just sitting outside in the evenings, listening to the ocean and watching the sun set over the water. The sound of the waves here is different than what you get at the busy beaches – more rhythmic, less chaotic. And parking? Super easy, which anyone who’s driven around the Big Island during peak season will appreciate.

Here’s the thing that surprised me most: the attention to small details that actually matter when you’re traveling. The Wi-Fi works reliably (not always a given on the islands), the water pressure is solid, and they’ve got this setup where you can rinse off saltwater and sand without tracking it through your room. I also loved that they provide beach chairs and coolers – seems obvious, but you’d be amazed how many places skip these basics. The 9.5 rating makes total sense once you’ve been there a few days. It’s not about having marble countertops or a fancy lobby; it’s about everything just working the way it should, plus little touches that show someone’s paying attention. I mean, they even had local coffee in the rooms, and I’m talking actual good stuff, not that generic hotel brand nonsense. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward too – no upselling or complicated explanations, just genuine recommendations about nearby spots worth visiting. If you’re looking for a place that feels authentic to Hawaii without the tourist trap markup, this is it. Just don’t expect a pool or room service – this is more about embracing the natural beauty around you than hiding from it inside.

Travelers should reserve a hotel in Hawaii at least two months ahead of their visit to ensure availability and secure better rates, especially during the peak winter season when the islands host numerous cultural festivals and outdoor activities.

Beautiful renovated unit. 5 minute walk from the cliffs. Remote quiet location in residential area about 20-30 minutes from Hilo. There is no beach, as beaches are very rare on the East Coast of the Big Island. It’s all cliffs and high surf. If you are looking for a beach vacation, you need to stay on the West Coast, by Kona. Hale O Malú is a great spot for those seeking to see the natural beauty of the big island. It has great proximity to the Hawaii Volcano National Park, and within driving distance to many waterfalls. There’s a fabulous farmers market bout 15 minutes away on Sundays only. Much cheaper and bigger than Hilo Farmers Market.

The facilities are possibly the cleanest rental we have ever stayed at. The only part that could have been cleaned better was the refrigerator.

We loved having access to the backyard with the lush vegetation and eating breakfast on the patio. The rooms were all very nicely decorated and very clean. The mini-kitchen area and amenities were super convenient for making breakfast. The hosts were very responsive and friendly.

  • Dedrick from United States (10/10)

The room was Clean! Comfortable! and Inviting, and most importantly Affordable! There was so much thought put into making our stay great by the host, for example….the booklet the host put together with information about the island, restaurants, sites to visit, and even a list of translated words to use when talking to the locals. The bed had a firm and a soft pillow for each guest! There was beach gear and even bug spray available for us to use. Overall, it was a great place.
