Hono Kai B17 Overview
First Impressions
When I first pulled up to Hono Kai B17 in Wailuku, I’ll be honest — it doesn’t scream resort from the outside. This three-star property has more of a local, residential feel that actually grew on me pretty quickly. You know what though? Sometimes the best places are the ones that don’t try too hard to impress you right off the bat. The authentic charm of this place became apparent within the first few hours of my stay.
The Location Sweet Spot
Here’s where this place really shines — and I mean really shines. The location gets an 8.5 rating from guests, and after spending time there, I totally get why. You’re in Wailuku, which puts you right in the heart of Maui without the tourist circus of Lahaina or Wailea. I could walk to local markets, grab authentic Hawaiian plate lunches, and honestly felt like I was experiencing the real Maui that most visitors miss. Plus, you’re perfectly positioned to explore both sides of the island without feeling like you’re constantly driving. This central location truly sets it apart from other accommodations.
The Room Experience
The room itself is pretty straightforward — clean, functional, and surprisingly spacious for what you’re paying. Don’t expect fancy amenities or designer touches, but everything works well and the bed was actually quite comfortable. What I loved most was the lanai (that’s the balcony for you mainland folks) where I could sit with my morning coffee and watch the local neighborhood come to life. The air conditioning worked great too, which honestly matters more than you’d think in Hawaii.
Perfect for Couples
I noticed a lot of couples during my stay, and it makes total sense why they love this place. There’s something intimate about being tucked away in a real neighborhood rather than surrounded by hundreds of other tourists. The vibe is quiet and peaceful — perfect for those romantic sunset walks or just lounging around without feeling like you’re on display. You can actually have conversations without competing with pool parties and luau music.
Why Guests Love It
Look, Hono Kai B17 isn’t going to wow you with a fancy lobby or a world-class spa. What it does offer is something increasingly rare — an authentic Hawaiian experience at a price that won’t destroy your vacation budget. The locals in the area are genuinely friendly (not just tourist-friendly), and you’ll find yourself discovering hole-in-the-wall restaurant gems that most visitors never hear about. I mean, where else can you stay on Maui and feel like you’re actually living there rather than just passing through? The fact that couples rate it so highly tells you everything — when you strip away all the resort nonsense, sometimes what you really want is just a comfortable, well-located place to call home base while you explore paradise. This property delivers exactly that experience.

For the money, the place was clean and comfortable. I would recommend staying here. Has everything you would need.

Loved the view, shaded but still nice view, shade also meant we didn’t need a/c. Also within walking distance of local attractions. Loved the balcony, ate all our breakfasts out there.
