Honomu Inn Overview
First Impressions
The Honomu Inn sits right on Old Mamalahoa Highway in this tiny Big Island town, and honestly, it’s one of those places that feels like a genuine Hawaiian discovery. You know what I mean — not the resort version of Hawaii, but the real deal where locals actually live and work. This three-star spot doesn’t try to be fancy, but there’s something really appealing about its straightforward approach to island hospitality. It’s the kind of place that rewards travelers seeking authenticity over polish.
Location & Neighborhood
I’ll be straight with you — Honomu is basically a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it town, but that’s actually part of its charm. You’re perfectly positioned for exploring the Hamakua Coast, and Akaka Falls is practically next door (seriously, it’s like a five-minute drive). The inn’s location makes it super easy to hit Rainbow Falls or venture into Hilo without dealing with resort traffic. There’s free parking right on site, which might not sound like a big deal until you’ve tried finding a spot in busier parts of the island. The surrounding area offers countless opportunities for adventure and discovery.
The Room Experience
The accommodations here are clean and comfortable — nothing revolutionary, but everything you need after a day of waterfall chasing or volcano exploring. Each room has that simple island vibe, and I actually appreciated not having a million amenities to distract from why you’re really here. The beds are decent, the air conditioning works (trust me, you’ll want it), and the whole setup feels more like staying at a well-run local guesthouse than a corporate hotel. Thoughtful touches throughout make your stay memorable.
Morning Fuel
Breakfast is continental style, but they also do grab-and-go options which is honestly perfect when you want to catch sunrise at Mauna Kea or get an early start on the Road to Hana. It’s not elaborate — think pastries, coffee, fruit — but it gets the job done. I mean, you’re probably going to spend most of your time outside anyway, so having something quick and reliable in the morning just makes sense. The morning offerings set a positive tone for your day of exploration.
Why Guests Love It
What really works about this place is its authenticity and that 8.9 guest rating doesn’t lie. Couples seem particularly drawn to the peaceful setting — there’s something romantic about being tucked away in this quiet corner of the Big Island. The staff actually knows the area and can point you toward hidden gems that aren’t in the guidebooks. Plus, you’re getting genuine value here — it’s not trying to charge resort prices for a simple, honest Hawaiian experience. If you want to feel like you’re discovering the real Hawaii rather than just visiting it, the Honomu Inn delivers exactly that. This is where genuine island hospitality comes alive.

Plenty of options to choose from
Jeffrey from United States (9/10)
Beautifully decorated in an 'old hawaii' fashion and a large room. Situated in a quiet community just north of Hilo, so accessible to those areas without the hustle and bustle. Free street parking was readily available.

This is a super cute botique hotel with really elegant and local decor. I loved hearing the coqui frogs at night, and the view from our room looked out to lush rainforest. It was very peaceful and not too remote– Hilo is only about a 20 minute drive down the Hawaii belt– though you feel like you're in the middle of nature. The breakfast is simple but well thought out. Very close to 'Akaka Falls.

There is a common kitchenette well supplied with continental breakfast items. Best thing was available coffee, made with fresh ground beans and pour-over pots not Keurig disposables.

Self service items in communal fridge – easy to access

Location in small town near Hilo but off the beaten path. Sound of frogs at night. Generous food in the shared fridge. Chance to interact with other inn guests in the communal space. Lush, pretty views out the windows. Beautiful waterfalls a few minutes’ drive away. Friendly post office down the street; friendly shop owners and coffee shop a few doors down.

This is a beautiful old building and the spacious room and deck were ideal for a few days. The breakfast items, including excellent coffee, provided in the kitchen were great and we had everything we needed to enjoy our stay and explore the North and East side of the island.

I was just looking for somewhere to stay close to my property in Laupahoehoe that I am working on and intend to build on in a couple of years. I just needed a shower and bed plus food close by and this property met all of my expectations. There is a good Pizza place close by with a Smooth / Acai bowl place right next door. Also don't forget Mister Ed's Bakery and Shave Ice up the street, very Iconic. The room is in a Historic old building that has been renovated very tastefully. Nice updated bathroom. Bed was a Queen size and very comfortable. I'd stay here again and probably will.

Very clean. Good location. Big room.

Certainly on the fancier side of things, given the area. Very responsive and helpful staff nearby. Food and drink included in the stay. Balcony and room were very private.
