Hotel Description
You know what? The Ilikai Hotel is one of those places that looks familiar even if you’ve never been there – and that’s because it was the hotel in the opening credits of Hawaii Five-O, with that iconic shot of Jack Lord on the balcony. I mean, how cool is that? But honestly, beyond the TV fame, this Waikiki high-rise has this sort of retro charm that actually works in its favor.
The thing about the Ilikai is that it sits right at the edge of Waikiki, where the Ala Wai Yacht Harbor meets the beach – so you’re getting these pretty sweet views of either the marina or the ocean, depending on which side you’re on. The marina views are actually underrated; there’s something relaxing about watching the boats bob around, especially in the early morning when it’s all quiet. The rooms themselves? Well, they’re definitely showing their age a bit – this isn’t a fancy resort renovation situation – but they’re clean and spacious, with those big lanais that make you feel like you’re living in old Hawaii. The kitchenettes are surprisingly functional too, which is clutch if you want to grab some poke from Foodland and eat it while watching the sunset instead of dropping $40 on room service.
What I really appreciate about this place is its location – you’re literally a two-minute walk to the lagoon area of Waikiki Beach, which tends to be way less crowded than the main stretch in front of the Royal Hawaiian. Plus, you’re right next to the Hilton Hawaiian Village, so you can wander over and check out their Friday night fireworks show without actually paying Hilton prices. The Duke’s Waikiki downstairs gets pretty lively (read: loud) on weekend nights, but if you’re the type who goes to bed early, just ask for a higher floor away from the restaurant side. Parking costs extra – because of course it does, this is Waikiki – but at least they have self-parking available, unlike some places that force you into valet situations. The pool area is nothing fancy, sort of tucked away and small, but honestly, you’re in Hawaii – you’ll probably be at the actual beach most of the time anyway. For a 3-star place with a 7.9 rating, the Ilikai delivers exactly what you’d expect: decent accommodations with a solid location and a bit of vintage Hawaiian hotel character thrown in.
Early hotels booking in Hawaii is essential during major events like the Ironman World Championship, as accommodations fill up quickly with visitors eager to experience the islands’ renowned surfing culture and tropical beauty.
