Makai Club Resort Overview
First Impressions
When you pull up to Makai Club Resort in Princeville, you immediately understand why couples rate this place so highly. The property sits right on Kauai’s dramatic north shore, where the Pacific stretches endlessly toward the horizon. It’s not trying to be the fanciest resort on the island — this three-star property has a relaxed, residential feel that honestly works better than some of the more pretentious places I’ve stayed. The moment you step out of your car (free parking, by the way, which is actually a big deal in Hawaii), you can hear the waves and feel that trade wind breeze that makes Kauai so special.
Location & Neighborhood
Princeville is sort of the sweet spot on Kauai’s north shore — you’re close enough to Hanalei Bay to grab dinner at those legendary food trucks, but far enough from the crowds to actually relax. The resort’s position on Lei O Papa Road puts you right in the heart of it all, and I mean that in the best way possible. You can walk to some incredible viewpoints along the bluffs, and honestly, the sunsets from this area are something else entirely. What I really appreciate is how the location gives you easy access to both the touristy stuff and the more hidden gems that locals know about.
The Accommodations
The units at Makai Club Resort feel more like vacation condos than typical hotel rooms, which is exactly what you want for a longer stay. Most have full kitchens — and you’ll actually want to use them because the local farmers markets have incredible produce. The ocean views from many units are genuinely spectacular, especially if you snag one of the upper-level spots. The decor is comfortable island style without being too kitschy, though don’t expect cutting-edge design. What matters more is that everything works, the beds are comfortable, and you’ve got space to spread out after a day of exploring.
The Resort Experience
This isn’t a place where you’ll find elaborate pools or fancy restaurants — Makai Club Resort keeps things refreshingly simple. The pool area is pleasant enough for an afternoon swim, but honestly, you’re probably going to spend most of your time exploring the incredible beaches and hiking trails nearby. The staff knows the area well and can point you toward the less crowded spots, which is worth its weight in gold on an island where everyone seems to hit the same Instagram-famous locations. There’s something to be said for a place that doesn’t try to keep you on property when the real attractions are the natural wonders just outside your door.
Why Guests Love It
What keeps people coming back to this resort is the combination of that unbeatable location and the unpretentious vibe. You’re getting genuine value here — a place where you can wake up to ocean views, walk to some of the most beautiful coastline in Hawaii, and not feel like you’re paying resort prices for every little thing. The high ratings make sense when you experience how the property balances comfort with that authentic Hawaiian feel that’s getting harder to find. It’s the kind of place where you actually feel like you’re living in Hawaii for a week, not just visiting another hotel that happens to be in paradise.
The concierge service in Hawaii can arrange exclusive volcano helicopter tours, secure reservations at oceanfront luau restaurants, and organize personalized snorkeling adventures with marine biologists.

We rented a 2-bedroom apartment that was clean and spacious. The high ceilings, lanais, and two king-sized beds were a highlight. The pool and hot tub area was great. Staff members Jackie, Jamie, and Andrew were hospitable and helpful throughout our stay.

This place is quiet and well-maintained. The staff is friendly. If you would like to stay on the north side of the island, this is good.

Very spacious and comfortable apartment, with full kitchen and laundry. Immaculately clean and well maintained. Beautiful grounds. We enjoyed the nice pool and jacuzzi. Staff were great providing information. Office lends beach chairs, umbrellas and bicycles. The general location is good for exploring the North Shore and everything it has to offer.

The bed was extremely comfortable, the welcome package was very thoughtful. The big surprise was the library with stories from Kauai. Loved it!

We love the location. Our apartment had a view of the waterfalls above nearby Hanalei Bay. It's a short drive to Hanalei and the Princeville Center (for restaurants, shops and grocery stores) and the beautiful Makai golf course.
The apartment buildings are set well apart from one another with large, landscaped lawn areas in-between. We used the well-maintained swimming pool area, which has lounge chairs, umbrellas, propane barbecue, restroom and a soda machine that accepts credit cards.
This was our second stay at the Makai Club Resort, and the staff members were as welcoming and helpful as during our first visit a year and a half ago.
We used the resort's free beach chairs and umbrella. They let guests keep them during their stays. We also rented snorkel, mask and swim fins from the resort at a nominal price.
We will most likely return to the Makai Club Resort on our next visit to Kauai.
