It’s this unassuming 3-star spot that sits in Papaikou, and honestly, the location is pretty much perfect if you’re planning to spend serious time at the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden (yes, it really is less than three miles away, I checked).

The thing about Papaikou is that it’s far enough from the Hilo crowds to feel peaceful, but close enough that you’re not completely isolated. You’ll hear the ocean at night – not crashing waves, more like this constant gentle whoosh that becomes your new white noise machine. The property itself has that relaxed Big Island vibe where nobody’s rushing around in suits, and check-in feels more like visiting a friend’s place than dealing with hotel bureaucracy. I was surprised by how well-maintained everything was for a 3-star – the grounds are actually really nicely kept, with these huge tropical plants that make you feel like you’re staying in someone’s private garden retreat. The rooms aren’t fancy, but they’re clean and comfortable with that slightly vintage Hawaii feel that somehow works perfectly here.

What really sold me on this place was the morning routine it naturally creates. You wake up (probably earlier than usual because of the roosters – fair warning), grab some coffee, and you’re literally minutes away from some of the most incredible botanical hiking on the Big Island. The Scenic Route is right there too, so you can easily make your way up to Akaka Falls or down to Laupahoehoe Point without dealing with Hilo traffic. Parking is never an issue, which – if you’ve spent any time on the Big Island – you know is actually a big deal. The 9.5 rating makes total sense once you realize this isn’t trying to be a resort; it’s trying to be a really solid base camp for exploring this part of the island, and it absolutely nails that. Plus, the owners clearly know their guests are here for the nature stuff, so there’s none of that weird pressure to hang around the property all day. It’s the kind of place where you collapse happily exhausted each evening after a day of waterfalls and gardens, already planning tomorrow’s adventure.
