Phoenix Garden Overview
First Impressions
Phoenix Garden sits tucked away on East Pohakupele Loop in Pahoa, and honestly, the moment you arrive, you realize you’ve found something special. This three-star property doesn’t try to be flashy — instead, it focuses on creating that authentic Big Island experience that couples seem to absolutely love (and trust me, the 9.6 rating speaks for itself). The setting feels genuinely Hawaiian without any of the touristy resort vibes you might expect.
Location & Neighborhood
Pahoa is one of those places that locals will tell you about if they really like you — it’s got this laid-back, artistic vibe that’s become harder to find on the Big Island. You’re actually positioned perfectly here to explore Lava Tree State Monument, which is just a short drive away, and the famous Kalapana black sand beaches are totally doable as a day trip. What I really appreciate is how Phoenix Garden gives you that sense of being in “real” Hawaii, away from the cruise ship crowds but still close enough to hit the major attractions when you want to.
The Property Experience
The garden setting is where this place really shines — I mean, they didn’t choose the name randomly. You’ll find yourself surrounded by tropical plants that actually thrive in this climate (not the struggling landscaping you see at some places). The accommodations have that comfortable, unpretentious feel that works so well for couples looking to disconnect and just enjoy each other’s company. There’s something about the way the property is laid out that creates natural privacy without feeling isolated.
What Makes It Special
You know what really sets Phoenix Garden apart? It’s the kind of place where you can wake up to actual bird sounds instead of traffic, but you’re not stuck in the middle of nowhere if you need supplies or want to grab dinner out. The recent guest feedback consistently mentions the location as a top highlight, and after spending time in the area, I get it — you’re close to some incredible natural attractions while staying somewhere that feels like a peaceful retreat. The property strikes that perfect balance between accessibility and tranquility that’s honestly pretty rare.
Why Guests Love It
Couples keep coming back to Phoenix Garden because it delivers on that romantic Big Island getaway without the hefty price tag of the resort areas. The high ratings from recent guests reflect what you’ll experience — a well-maintained property in a location that feels both authentic and convenient for exploring. Whether you’re planning to spend your days hiking through lava tubes or just want a quiet base for watching incredible sunsets, this place gives you the flexibility to do both. It’s the kind of spot where you’ll find yourself already planning your return visit before you’ve even checked out.
Early hotels booking in Hawaii is essential during major events like the Ironman World Championship, as accommodations fill up quickly with visitors eager to experience the islands’ renowned surfing culture and tropical beauty.

It's a very special, a kind magical place. The house ist surrounded by beautiful garden. So we were really invited to relaxe. The whole interior of the apartment is very fantastic, many small wonderful details. We enjoyed a fine selected variety of books in Hawaiian culture and nature. The contact to the owner was really nice and interesting.

The house was perfect, very clean, the beds comfortable, the bathroom incredible, the balcony with the view of the jungle incredible too. It was like a corner of paradise, very exotic. I personally loved the sounds of the coqui frogs during the night. I really recommend this accommodation.

We had a lovely stay on the second floor of Jacob's house overlooking his garden. This was great because there were mosquitos on the ground level and we hardly got any bites when we were on the balcony. We probably should have checked in first before going to the grocery store as he had the basics available in the kitchen, pantry and fridge. We felt like we were in our own home, which is how we like to vacation. Jacob even helped us with cutting open the 4 coconuts we had bought. And the laundry machines were an added plus! We also liked that he was eco-conscious!

Garden was pretty, rainforest sounds to sleep to, house has some basics like chairs and snorkel gear, they recycle and compost, full kitchen w/ dishwasher. Beds were comfy, rooms large enough, everything very clean. Fast WiFi! (200mbps+).

What a beautiful house. It exceeded my high expectations. We love the location but it is a long hour plus drive to volcano national Park or akaka falls and half an hour to Foodland so plan ahead. The WiFi is excellent and the kitchen has most everything you could hope for. The coffee maker is a French press. The refrigerator and pantry had a lot of basics which is much appreciated

The house is surrounded by nature. A vine-covered entryway takes you to your garden house. We enjoyed breakfast every morning on the patio where we heard lots of sounds of nature and were greeted by cute lizards. Nice bathroom with everything provided like plenty of towels, cleaning products, and even essence oils. Full kitchen with abundant cooking wares and seasonings to make your own meals. Books and board games are there so you can spend time away from the internet. No reception for our T-Mobile, but wifi works well.
