So here’s the thing about Royal Kahana – it’s one of those places where you really need to know what you’re getting into, and honestly, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. The whole “select your unit” thing in the name should be your first clue that this isn’t your typical hotel experience. You’re basically booking into a condo complex, which means your room could be absolutely fantastic or… well, let’s just say the owners have different decorating philosophies.

I stayed here twice actually, and the first unit had this amazing lanai overlooking the ocean with furniture that felt like someone’s beloved beach house. The second time? Think 1980s time capsule with questionable carpet choices – but you know what, the view was still incredible and the price reflected the difference. That’s the gamble you take with these individually owned units, and most people either love the authenticity of it or find it frustrating. The location though – that’s where this place really shines. You’re right on Kahana Beach, which locals will tell you is one of the better swimming spots on this stretch of coast. No crazy shore break like some of the more famous beaches, and it’s never as packed as Kaanapali down the road.

The building itself feels very 1970s Hawaii – not in a bad way, more like stepping into a time when things were built to last rather than just look pretty in photos. The pool area gets busy during pau hana time (that’s happy hour for you mainland folks), and you’ll hear a mix of mainlanders and locals, which I always take as a good sign. Parking can be tight during peak season – I mean really tight, like circling the lot multiple times tight – but there’s usually something if you’re patient. The front desk staff has been there forever and actually knows the island, not just the resort, so they’re worth chatting with about dinner spots or snorkel conditions. Check-in can be slow because they’re dealing with different owners and different rules for each unit, but once you’re settled, it feels more like borrowing a friend’s place than staying in a hotel. That 7.8 rating makes sense to me – it’s not luxury, but it’s real Hawaii without the corporate polish, and sometimes that’s exactly what you want.

  The ocean view was great, the comfort and convenience of the room was also great. I would definitely consider this property again. The front desk staff were hospitable and friendly and checkin was quick and easy.
