Sugar Beach Resort Overview
First Impressions
Walking into Sugar Beach Resort, you immediately get that relaxed Maui vibe — it’s not trying to be the fanciest place on the island, but there’s something genuinely welcoming about it. The three-star property sits right in Kihei, and honestly, the location alone makes it worth considering. You can tell this place has been around for a while, but in a good way — it feels established and comfortable rather than flashy or pretentious.
The Kihei Advantage
Here’s what I love about staying in Kihei — you’re on the sunny side of Maui without the crazy crowds of Wailea or the tourist chaos of Lahaina. Sugar Beach Resort puts you right where you want to be, just steps from one of the island’s longest stretches of sandy beach. The snorkeling at nearby Kealia Pond is actually pretty decent, and you’re close enough to Wailea’s upscale dining scene when you want to splurge, but far enough away that you’re not paying those resort prices for everything. Plus, the drive to Haleakala or the Road to Hana is totally manageable from here.
Accommodations and Amenities
The rooms are clean and functional — think condo-style setups with kitchenettes that actually come in handy when you want to grab groceries from Foodland and make your own breakfast. The pool area is where people tend to gather, and it’s got that laid-back atmosphere where you’ll end up chatting with other travelers about their day trips. I mean, it’s not going to blow you away with fancy finishes, but everything works well and the ocean views from many units are genuinely nice. The grounds are well-maintained, and there’s enough space that it doesn’t feel cramped even when it’s busy.
Beach Life and Activities
The beach access is really the star here — you’re literally right on Sugar Beach, which stretches for miles and is perfect for morning walks or sunset strolls. The water can be a bit shallow and sometimes weedy, but that’s typical for this part of Kihei. What’s great is how easy it is to explore other beaches from here — Wailea Beach is just a short drive south, and you can walk to Kamaole Beach Parks when you want better swimming conditions. The resort doesn’t overwhelm you with organized activities, which I actually appreciate — you’re here for Maui, not to be stuck at the hotel all day.
Why Guests Love It
This place really shines for couples looking for a relaxed base to explore the island — no wonder it gets such high marks from romantic travelers. The combination of beachfront location, reasonable rates, and that authentic Maui feel makes it a solid choice. You’re not paying for a bunch of amenities you might not use, but you’re getting the essentials done right. The staff knows the area well and can point you toward the best local spots, whether that’s a hidden snorkeling spot or where to catch the most amazing sunset. It’s the kind of place where you can actually relax and feel like you’re experiencing real island life, not just staying at another generic resort.

This was a very comfy home away from home for us! The decor was nice, comfortable size, clean and we had the beach in our backyard! Location was great! Easy access to meet up with our family friends or catch a bite to eat or do some shopping! Truly enjoyed our week here!! Mahalo nui loa!

Being right on the beach, the hotel was well located and sea views from the apartment were great. The room was really spacious as well. The access to the pool and BBQ facilities also added a lot of fun to our stay. Parking was free and spacious.

Great location right on Sugar Beach with easy access to the rest of the island (I love Kihei!) Clean condo Loved the facilities with the big grill area right next to the beach and the large pool area that my son loved. Very nicely maintained property with beautiful garden and koi pond. Condo had a great view of the ocean and there was plenty of parking close to the resort and condos, never had to fight for a parking spot. The staff provided excellent service for the few issuess I had and was quick to come up with solutions.

The beachfront view from unit 514 was fabulous !!! Large balconies. Spacious unit with everything that you need for a stay in a condo on the beach. The "welcome package" was very thoughtful and useful — it was very much appreciated. Very comfortable unit….

Beach location, views from the room, automatic shut off for the air conditioner when patio doors were open, the treats provided, the availability of pool/spa/beach access, and the close proximity to the airport.
