Hotel Description
You know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to The View in Kau – I mean, it’s a 3-star place and honestly, the name had me a little skeptical. But sometimes you get pleasantly surprised, and this was definitely one of those times.
The thing about Kau district is that it’s this wonderfully sleepy part of the Big Island that most tourists just drive through on their way to somewhere else, which actually works in your favor here. The hotel sits in this sweet spot where you’re far enough from the cruise ship crowds but close enough to some really spectacular stuff that locals don’t talk about much. The “view” part of the name? Yeah, they weren’t kidding around – depending on which room you get, you’re looking out at either the ocean or these rolling green hills that change color throughout the day. I spent way too much time just sitting on the little lanai with my coffee in the morning, watching the light shift across everything.
What I really appreciated was how unpretentious the whole place feels. The lobby’s got this lived-in comfort that reminds me more of staying at someone’s house than a hotel – there’s usually local music playing softly, and the staff actually seems to know the area instead of just reading from some script. Check-in was refreshingly quick, and they gave me real recommendations for places to eat nearby (not the usual tourist traps). The rooms are clean and comfortable without trying too hard to be fancy – good beds, decent shower pressure, and those windows that actually open so you can hear the trade winds at night. Is everything perfect? Well, the WiFi can be a bit spotty, and if you’re used to resort-style amenities, you might feel like something’s missing. But honestly, that’s kind of the point of being out here.
The location really grows on you once you realize what you’ve got access to. You’re maybe twenty minutes from some of the best black sand beaches on the island, and there’s this local farmers market on weekends where you can get the most incredible tropical fruit – I’m talking about stuff you’ve never even heard of that tastes like vacation in your mouth. Plus, if you’re into the whole volcano thing (and let’s be honest, who isn’t?), you’re positioned perfectly for day trips without having to deal with all the tour bus madness. The 8.0 rating makes total sense to me – it’s not trying to be something it’s not, but what it does, it does really well. If you’re looking for a genuine slice of Hawaiian life without the resort markup and you don’t mind trading some polish for authentic character, The View in Kau delivers exactly what it promises.
The concierge service in Hawaii can arrange exclusive volcano helicopter tours, secure reservations at oceanfront luau restaurants, and organize personalized snorkeling adventures with marine biologists.

Hosts are really kind and friendly. They can give you some tips about the area, what to see etc. They tried to solve our problems that shouldn’t exist in the first place…
Bed was comfortable
Big TV with some additional speakers so you can listen to your favorite music
They have two big friendly dogs. That’s ok for me. They didn’t let them out when we arrived so it’s ok
