Waikiki Malia Overview
First Impressions
Walking into Waikiki Malia, you immediately get that authentic Hawaiian vibe without the pretentious resort atmosphere that dominates much of Waikiki. This three-star hotel sits right on Kuhio Avenue, and honestly, the location couldn’t be better — you’re literally in the heart of everything but somehow it doesn’t feel overwhelming. The lobby has this relaxed, welcoming energy that makes you feel like you’ve found a local gem rather than just another tourist trap.
Location & Neighborhood
Here’s what I love about staying here — you’re perfectly positioned between the beach and all the local action on Kuhio Avenue. The beach is just a quick two-minute walk, but you’re also surrounded by authentic Hawaiian eateries, ABC stores for those inevitable forgotten essentials, and local bars where you’ll actually meet people who live here. I mean, couples absolutely rave about this spot, and I get why — there’s something romantic about being able to stroll to the beach for sunrise, then grab coffee at a neighborhood café without fighting resort crowds.
The Room Experience
The rooms at Waikiki Malia are what I’d call comfortably unpretentious. You’re not getting marble bathrooms or designer furniture, but everything works well and feels clean and updated. Most rooms have that tropical island décor that actually feels authentic rather than forced — think local artwork and colors that complement the Hawaiian setting. The air conditioning works great (crucial in Honolulu), and you know what? The beds are genuinely comfortable, which matters more than fancy amenities when you’ve spent the day hiking Diamond Head or surfing.
Practical Perks
One thing that really sets this place apart is the parking situation — they actually have parking available, which is honestly a huge deal in Waikiki where most places either don’t offer it or charge ridiculous fees. The staff here knows the area inside and out, so they’re great for recommendations that go beyond the typical tourist spots. They’ll point you toward the local plate lunch places and tell you which beaches are less crowded depending on the day of the week.
Why Guests Love It
What makes Waikiki Malia special is that balance between convenience and authenticity that’s surprisingly hard to find in this area. You’re staying in what’s rated as the best area in Honolulu, but you’re doing it without the inflated prices and stuffy atmosphere of the big resort chains. The hotel attracts travelers who want to experience the real Hawaii — people who’d rather spend their money on activities and local food than on overpriced room service and resort fees. It’s the kind of place where you’ll end up chatting with other guests about snorkeling spots and hiking trails, and where the front desk staff remembers your name by day two.

Great location central to Waikiki. There’s also an ihop and a sports bar next door if you need it. The room is really good with a nice bathroom. They also do things in the lobby during the day such as free gelato. We stayed during Christmas and they gave everyone staying a small present which was a really nice touch.

A nice location near all restaurants and shops. Not so far from the beach. Jacuzzi working until 10pm, and a small pool working the same hours. Beach towels.

The location was perfect. Very close to the beach and bus stops. We could be able to see the firework at Hilton from our balcony on Friday nights. It was a great idea to use reusable bottles for refilling drinking water.
Katherine from Australia (9/10)
Location is wonderful, having a full length mirror and small fridge was great. Hair dryer was decent. There are microwaves on 2 of the floors for use which was helpful. Beds were very comfortable.

Loved Paia Seafood restaurant nearby. They gave us beach towels and refillable water bottles, which was much appreciated.
