Location & Neighborhood

You’re basically in the sweet spot of West Maui here. Kahana Beach is literally a few steps away, and I mean the kind of beach where locals actually hang out — not just tour groups. The snorkeling right offshore is incredible, especially in the morning when the water’s calm. What I love about this area is that you’re close enough to Lahaina (about 10 minutes south) for dinner and shopping, but far enough away that you’re not dealing with the chaos. There’s a Foodland nearby for groceries, which is clutch if you want to grab supplies for beach days or make simple meals.

The Accommodations

The units at Mahina Surf feel more like staying in someone’s well-appointed condo than a typical hotel room. Most have full kitchens — and I actually mean full, not those sad little kitchenettes with a mini-fridge and microwave. You’ll find real appliances, decent counter space, and enough dishes to handle cooking if that’s your thing. The lanais (balconies) are where you’ll probably spend your mornings with coffee, watching the ocean wake up. The decor is pleasantly understated — think island casual without the tacky tiki stuff.

The Beach Experience

Here’s what sets this place apart: you’re not fighting for beach space or dealing with resort crowds. Kahana Beach has this mellow, neighborhood feel where you might chat with the same local fisherman a few mornings in a row. The water entry is gentle, making it perfect for swimming, and the reef system just offshore means you can snorkel without booking a boat tour. I’ve seen green sea turtles here more times than I can count — they seem to love the area as much as the guests do. The beach isn’t huge, but that’s part of its charm.

  Quiet relaxed apartment in small complex with sea views, great pool and nice gardens. Bonus was a small beach nearby frequented by turtles every day we were there. Close to shops but would ideally need access to a car to make the most of the area.

  The location is excellent, we would definitely stay here again! We saw lots of turtles on the beach nearby. The apartment was clean. The furniture was a bit dated, but in perfect condition. The kitchen had everything that we needed. We were offered coffee and chocolate on our arrival, which was a nice touch.
