Hale O Malu at Kaloli Point Overview
First Impressions
When I first pulled up to Hale O Malu at Kaloli Point, I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect from this three-star property tucked away on Kiawe Drive. But you know what? Sometimes the best discoveries happen when you’re not looking for perfection. This place sits right on Kaloli Point, and I mean right on it — you can hear the waves from the moment you step out of your car. The parking is free and right on-site, which is actually a bigger deal than you might think in Hawaii.
Location Magic
Here’s the thing about Keaau — it’s not where most tourists end up, and that’s exactly why this spot works so well. You’re about 20 minutes from Hilo, close enough to grab supplies or explore the town, but far enough away that you feel like you’ve found your own little slice of the Big Island. The coastline here is rugged and real, not the postcard-perfect beaches you see everywhere else. Couples seem to really get this vibe — I can see why they rate the location so highly for romantic getaways.
The Accommodation
My room had this laid-back island feel that you can’t fake — we’re talking about authentic Hawaiian hospitality here, not some corporate chain trying to manufacture aloha spirit. The space felt comfortable without being fancy, which honestly matched the whole vibe of the place perfectly. What really got me was waking up to those ocean views — there’s something about watching the sunrise over the Pacific that makes you forget about thread counts and marble bathrooms.
What Makes It Special
The staff here actually knows your name after the first day, which tells you something about the scale and the care they put into running this place. I spent a good chunk of my time just sitting outside, listening to the waves and watching the local birds do their thing. It’s the kind of spot where you realize you’ve been checking your phone way less than usual. The property sits right where the land meets the sea, and you get this constant soundtrack of waves that’s better than any white noise machine.
Why Guests Love It
Look, this isn’t going to be everyone’s cup of tea — if you need a spa and room service, you’ll want to look elsewhere. But if you’re after that authentic Big Island experience, the kind where you feel connected to the place rather than insulated from it, Hale O Malu delivers in a way that surprised me. The 9.5 rating makes sense when you consider what this place is actually offering — it’s not trying to be something it’s not, and guests clearly appreciate that honesty. You’re paying for location, authenticity, and that rare feeling of finding somewhere that still feels like a secret.
Travelers should reserve a hotel in Hawaii at least two months ahead of their visit to ensure availability and secure better rates, especially during the peak winter season when the islands host numerous cultural festivals and outdoor activities.

Reviews of Hale O Malu at Kaloli Point

Beautiful renovated unit. 5 minute walk from the cliffs. Remote quiet location in residential area about 20-30 minutes from Hilo. There is no beach, as beaches are very rare on the East Coast of the Big Island. It’s all cliffs and high surf. If you are looking for a beach vacation, you need to stay on the West Coast, by Kona. Hale O Malú is a great spot for those seeking to see the natural beauty of the big island. It has great proximity to the Hawaii Volcano National Park, and within driving distance to many waterfalls. There’s a fabulous farmers market bout 15 minutes away on Sundays only. Much cheaper and bigger than Hilo Farmers Market.

The facilities are possibly the cleanest rental we have ever stayed at. The only part that could have been cleaned better was the refrigerator.
Kj from Canada (10/10)
Loved the neighbourhood setting, closeness to cliffs for watching waves, and closeness to Shipman’s Beach hike.
Baden from Australia (9/10)
Lovely accomodation, quiet area, walk to ocean, but you do need a car

We loved having access to the backyard with the lush vegetation and eating breakfast on the patio. The rooms were all very nicely decorated and very clean. The mini-kitchen area and amenities were super convenient for making breakfast. The hosts were very responsive and friendly.

The room was Clean! Comfortable! and Inviting, and most importantly Affordable! There was so much thought put into making our stay great by the host, for example….the booklet the host put together with information about the island, restaurants, sites to visit, and even a list of translated words to use when talking to the locals. The bed had a firm and a soft pillow for each guest! There was beach gear and even bug spray available for us to use. Overall, it was a great place.
