Hilo Reeds Bay Hotel Overview

First Impressions

Walking into Hilo Reeds Bay Hotel, you immediately get that classic Hawaiian vibe — it’s not trying to be flashy or modern, and honestly, that’s exactly what makes it work. This three-star property sits right on Banyan Drive, which locals call “Hilo’s hotel row,” though it feels more like a quiet residential street lined with massive banyan trees. The lobby has this relaxed, almost retro feel that reminds you this isn’t Waikiki — you’re on the Big Island’s quieter, more authentic side.

Location & Neighborhood

The location is actually fantastic, especially if you’re planning to explore the eastern side of the Big Island. You’re literally a few minutes’ walk from Liliuokalani Gardens, which is this beautiful Japanese-style park that most tourists somehow miss. Couples seem to really appreciate the setting — I can see why, since you can stroll along Reeds Bay in the evening and watch the sunset reflect off Hilo Bay. Plus, having free parking is huge here because downtown Hilo can be tricky to navigate, and you’ll definitely want a car to hit places like Rainbow Falls or Akaka Falls.

The Rooms

The rooms are comfortable without being fancy — think clean, functional spaces with that slightly dated Hawaiian hotel aesthetic that’s actually kind of charming. Most rooms have views of either the bay or the gardens, and while the furnishings aren’t cutting-edge, everything works well. The air conditioning is reliable (which matters more than you’d think in Hilo’s humidity), and the beds are comfortable enough after a long day of waterfall chasing. You know what I really appreciated? The rooms are quiet — those thick banyan trees outside seem to muffle any street noise.

Exploring from Here

What makes this place special is how it positions you for Big Island adventures. You’re about 45 minutes from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, which means you can actually stay here and do day trips to see active lava flows. The hotel staff knows the area well — they’ll tell you which waterfalls are worth the hike and when the farmer’s market downtown is worth visiting (Wednesday and Saturday mornings, by the way). Hilo itself gets overlooked by a lot of visitors rushing to Kona, but it’s got this authentic small-town Hawaii feel that’s getting harder to find.

Why Guests Love It

People keep coming back to Hilo Reeds Bay Hotel because it delivers exactly what it promises — a comfortable, well-located base for exploring without any pretense. The staff treats you like family rather than tourists, and there’s something refreshing about a hotel that focuses on the basics done well. It’s not going to wow you with fancy amenities, but after a day hiking through bamboo forests or watching lava meet the ocean, you’ll appreciate having a peaceful place to recharge. The free parking and that prime location near both natural attractions and Hilo’s small but vibrant downtown make it a smart choice for travelers who want to experience the real Big Island.

Early hotels booking in Hawaii is essential during major events like the Ironman World Championship, as accommodations fill up quickly with visitors eager to experience the islands’ renowned surfing culture and tropical beauty.

Reviews of Hilo Reeds Bay Hotel

  • Jones from United States Minor Outlying Islands (8/10)

I liked how clean it was, very well kept for a older hotel.very attentive staff. It felt nostalgic and like home. My diamond in the rough.

  • Prakash from United States (8/10)

    stay was good

  • Dixon from United Kingdom (7/10)

Good location. We loved the banyan trees and the nearby park and coast.

  • Jill from Australia (6/10)

Initial impression of hotel on arrival was that it was a bit shabby, but the rooms were clean and the staff friendly and, although about 2 miles out of central Hilo, was well located for places to eat.

  • Wchilverbest from Australia (6/10)

Good location for my needs, although I prefer to be closer to downtown.

  • Stephen from United States (8/10)

Location is beautiful. Next to very high class hotels.

  • Judy from United States (7/10)

Good location. Room and accommodations were sufficient but I was unaware there was no AC. It would have been nice to have coffee available for each morning that we stayed. I would have appreciated some conditioner for my hair. Paper towel have been appreciated, too. And maybe plastic cups for the bathroom for use brushing my teeth. I enjoyed the sliding doors but there was nothing to view except the parking lot of the apartments next door. The fridge was useful and the coffee maker.

  • Andres from Colombia (8/10)

The location could not be better, close to everything and right on the free bus line 101. Only 10min away from the airport and not far from the best beaches for snorkeling next to the airport road

  • Avigdor from Canada (6/10)

Good location for a one night stay. Older hotel but clean. Pretty view of Reeds Bay.
