Look, I’ll be straight with you about this place – the Kihei Retreat isn’t going to blow you away with luxury, but honestly? That’s kind of the point. It’s one of those spots where you get the real Maui experience without the resort prices eating your vacation budget alive. The whole setup is pretty clever actually – you’re staying in what feels like a local apartment complex, but you get to use all the Kamaole Sands Resort facilities next door. I mean, who doesn’t want a pool and decent amenities without paying resort fees?

The location is where this place really shines, and I’m not just throwing around that “convenient location” nonsense. You’re literally across from Kamaole Beach Park II – that’s the one with the best snorkeling if you’re keeping track – and you can walk to those food trucks on South Kihei Road in about five minutes. The parking situation is way better than most places in Kihei too, which anyone who’s driven around here during peak season will appreciate. Now, it’s a 3-star place with a 7.4 rating, so set your expectations accordingly. The rooms are clean and functional rather than Instagram-worthy, but you know what? The lanai views make up for a lot. Some units look right out at the ocean, others toward Haleakala – both pretty solid options if you ask me.

What I really like about staying here is that you get that authentic Hawaii vibe without feeling like you’re trapped in a tourist bubble. Yeah, the furnishings are a bit dated and you might hear your neighbors occasionally (thin walls are pretty standard in these older Kihei buildings), but there’s something refreshing about a place that doesn’t try too hard. The staff actually knows your name after a day or two, the local coffee shop down the street becomes your morning routine, and you start feeling like you live there instead of just visiting. Plus, when you want that resort experience – maybe a fancy dinner or a more elaborate pool scene – the Grand Wailea and other big resorts are just a short drive up the road. It’s honestly the best of both worlds, especially if you’re the type who wants to explore the island rather than camp out at one resort all week.

  The condo was spacious with a great loft! The beautiful view from our balcony, the closeness to kamaole beach, restaurants, shops, etc. we’re appreciated. We also loved having boogie boards and beach toys and umbrellas to enjoy at the beach! And the grounds of Kamaole Sands are lovely to stroll through.
